Google Ads for Local Businesses: The Complete Guide

A practical playbook for local and service businesses: Local Services Ads, tight Search campaigns, negative keywords, landing pages, call tracking and what to fix before you raise the budget.

Local businesses and Google Ads are made for each other: people search with clear intent, nearby, often ready to call. Most local accounts do not fail because of the platform. They fail because of poor hygiene, such as loose keywords, missing negatives and every click landing on the homepage. This guide covers how to set it up properly, whether you are a plumber, an electrician, a dental clinic or any other local service business.

Start with Local Services Ads if you can

For many service categories, Local Services Ads (the "Google Guaranteed" or "Google Screened" listings at the top of results) bring cheaper leads than classic Search, because you pay per lead rather than per click. Availability depends on your business category and country, so check eligibility first. If you qualify, set these up before building Search campaigns.

Then build tight Search campaigns

  • Keywords: start with exact and phrase match on service plus location terms. Broad match without an experienced manager will eat your budget.
  • Location targeting: target the area you actually serve, and set it to people in or regularly in that area, not just people interested in it.
  • Ad schedule: if nobody answers the phone after 6 p.m., reduce bids or pause calls outside opening hours.
  • Call assets: add a call extension to every ad. For local services, the phone call is usually the conversion.

Negative keywords

Add obvious negatives from day one, such as "free", "jobs", "salary", "course", "DIY" and "reviews". Then check the search terms report every week and add anything that is clearly not a customer. This one habit saves more budget than any bidding strategy.

Landing pages that match the search

Give each service its own page. If someone searches "emergency boiler repair", the headline they land on should say exactly that, with your service area, reviews and a click-to-call button above the fold. Sending every click to the homepage is one of the most common reasons local campaigns underperform.

Track calls, not just clicks

Use call tracking numbers so you can see which campaigns and keywords produce real calls, and how long those calls last. Import qualified calls and booked jobs as conversions so Google optimises toward customers rather than clicks.

Budget and cleanup before scaling

Most existing local accounts can be improved with two or three hours of cleanup: removing wasted keywords, adding negatives, fixing landing pages and setting up conversion tracking. Do that before raising spend. Within the first 60 days of a disciplined setup you will have a clear picture of your cost per lead and which services are worth scaling.

The bottom line

Local Google Ads rewards discipline over budget. Get Local Services Ads running where available, keep Search campaigns tight, track every call and only scale what is already profitable.
